Hey Guys,
I think the issue is that DX9 is either not installed...as I don't believe it comes with Vista. Or it is broken..and DXDIAG doesn't see t as it is looking at DX10 files.
Here is the link to the DX9 redist. Please give this a go:

I hope this helps!

Hello Mark,
Thanks for the response, however, as I stated in my original post I have tried updating directx, both from the normal updater and by downloading the latest 9 redist and installing from there. On both occasions I get the directx error messages as stated.
If anyone else has any ideas I'd appreciate the input.

I had the same problem and this worked for me:

Go to the Dragon Age icon on the Start Menu (or desktop if you use desktop icons) and right-click and go to Properties, under Compatibility turn on the Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode.

ALSO, you can right-click the Dragon Age icon and select Run as Administrator. If your Windows account has administrator level privileges this will work too.

It runs! Enjoy!

I have had the same issue with Dragon Age: Origins. Same d3dx9_36.dll and internal error when updating DirectX. I've tried EVERYTHING anyone has suggested, but still have not been able to get the game to work. When I run the DXDIAG, it says that I have DirectX 11... I've tried downloading the missing file, un-installed/re-installed the game 4 times, updating DirectX (which gets to the 'finalizing' stage of the download and then gives me the internal error message), running as administrator, and when I tried to do the compatibility with XP SP3 (as suggested in this thread) I can only do XP SP1 or 2... no option for SP3 (I tried to do the SP2 compatibility and it didn't work). Are there any other suggestions to try? This is the only PC game I have ever purchased, and really want to play the game (I don't own a PS3).

DirectX needs to have the officially Full drivers downloaded directly from the video card manufacturer's own web site or video card chipset manufacturer. Then, you will need to also install the DirectX Redistributable 'update' found on Microsoft's web site. The 'Redistributable' update should provide the other DirectX levels required files as Vista might not have DirectX 9 built-in.

I did all of this as well and still was not working. I loaded it up onto my roommates computer (which is a desktop, while mine is a Laptop) and it loaded up with no issues... I looked back into the 'read me' and aparently I missed reading the part where the game is not compatable with any laptop or mobile components at this time. Thanks for your help though! I won't get to play it as often as I'd like, but at least I know I don't have a defective game. It would've been really really nice to have this printed on the back cover... I would've waited until I purchased a full desktop to purchase this game!
