Simon, I am having the same problem on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit system. I have tried the same things that you have tried and have yet to find a solution. I will keep looking and post here should I find a solution.Did this solve your problem?

Hey Guys,
I think the issue is that DX9 is either not installed...as I don't believe it comes with Vista. Or it is broken..and DXDIAG doesn't see t as it is looking at DX10 files.

Thanks for the response, however, as I stated in my original post I have tried updating directx, both from the normal updater and by downloading the latest 9 redist and installing from there. On both occasions I get the directx error messages as stated.
If anyone else has any ideas I'd appreciate the input.

I had the same problem and this worked for me:
Go to the Dragon Age icon on the Start Menu (or desktop if you use desktop icons) and right-click and go to Properties, under Compatibility turn on the Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode.
ALSO, you can right-click the Dragon Age icon and select Run as Administrator. If your Windows account has administrator level privileges this will work too.
